Acupuncture

Acupuncture treatment involves fine needles being inserted through the skin and left in position for approximately 20-30 minutes, this process may produce a dull or aching feeling but is otherwise painless.

Treatment usually involves six weekly sessions, but treatment will be tailored to the individual.

Why Choose a Medical Acupuncturist?

Acupuncture may be very useful in improving symptoms you experience, such as pain. A medical acupuncturist will be able to discuss your medical problems with you, will understand the results of medical tests you have had, and will understand what medication you are taking and why.

Dr Anna Smith trained with the British Medical Acupuncture Society which uses a scientific approach to explain the effects of acupuncture.

  • I am a GP with 28 years of NHS experience, and I have a special interest in medical acupuncture.
  • I am located near Witney, 12 miles west of Oxford.
  • I am the only medical acupuncturist in Oxfordshire.

What is Medical Acupuncture?

Medical Acupuncture is based on scientific research.

Acupuncture stimulates the nerves in the skin, muscle and other tissues and can produce a variety of effects. Acupuncture has been shown to improve blood flow and promote healing locally as well as stimulate the release of the body's natural painkillers, including endorphins and serotonin, in the spinal cord and brain pathways. Acupuncture can help regulate an overactive central nervous system, and this modifies the way pain signals are received by the brain.

Acupuncture affects pain management as well as the nervous, digestive, urinary, hormonal, respiratory and reproductive systems.

My wrist had been fractured after a fall and some arthritis has set in, so it was very painful and stiff, acupuncture treatment has given me more strength back and more grip, and I am in a lot less pain now."
