Burnout
03 September 2024
Burnout is not mere fatigue after a long day, it is more complex. It is the added physical and mental response from chronic emotional strain, a busy life and the emotional toll when we care for others.
It is important to recognise signs of burnout to regain a balance in your life.
A few tips for you:
- Consider adding breaks into your daily routine. This can improve your thinking, fatigue and problem solving. There is always a temptation to skip breaks to complete an extra task often leading to increased fatigue.
- Build mini breaks into your day – take a few calming breaths while boiling the kettle, go and stand outside with your cup of tea for a few minutes, or have a quick stretch.
- Be present in the moment- now! The present moment is the only one that exists, the past is gone, and the future hasn’t happened yet.
- Maintaining boundaries is important for a healthy life balance – learn to say ‘yes’ to the things you want in your life and ‘no’ to those things you do not want or need.
- Regular holidays/ days away can prevent burnout.
- Mini breaks in your day or longer breaks away from your routine on a holiday help give you a sense of well-being.
These tips help you calm your nervous system and enable you to respond rather than react to daily situations.
